SYNOPSIS: One of the creepiest stories ever written, Edgar Allan Poe's A Cask of Amontillado dramatizes the revenge of the obsessive nobleman Montresor against his friend, the wine lover, Fortunato. On carnival night in Venice, Montresor lures the tipsy Fortunato to his estate with the promise of a taste of rare Amontillado sherry. Down they go into the dank catacombs winding under the mansion until Montresor, feigning friendliness the whole way, finally chains the hapless Fortunato down and walls him in alive. The claustrophobic atmosphere, Montresor's smiling meanness and Fortunato's growing horror are bound to send chills down anyone's spine.

This play is ideal for high schools and community theater groups with strong actors. This show requires creative set, lighting and sound people who can portray the creepy atmosphere of the catacomb winding under the castle so it enhances the frightening menace of the smiling Montresor as he leads the hapless Fortunato to his terrible doom. For high schools, the play can be a great accompaniment to the study of the work of Edgar Allan Poe and this classic tale of terror.
