Improv comedy has been popularized in the U.S. and U.K. by the hit television show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” but improv has been around giving people laughs and goosebumps for a long time. 101 Improv Games For Children and Adults is an accessible guide to this magical art of creating something out of nothing — and bringing an audience to laughter using skills you didn’t even know you possessed.
The author explains the basis of improv (every unscripted, unrehearsed conversation we have every day is an improv), the “dos” and “don’ts” of performing, and how to teach improv to children. Basic exercises, from simple warm up activities to over-the-top crowd pleasing games, are explained with clear instructions on how to do them, what things to watch for and avoid, and how to know if you are succeeding. Also included are tips on subjects ranging from advanced improv techniques, putting together an improv troupe, to putting on your very own show. The games in this book include: freeze tag games, emotional games, fairy tales, directed games, guessing games, and narrative games.
101 Improv Games for Children and Adults is a wonderful resource for educators, drama students, or the layperson experimenting with improv for fun. Bob Bedore has been in theater for the past 24 years as a stand-up comedian, host of a live Saturday morning kids program, and radio disc jockey.
