BEHIND THE CURTAIN: With Dennis Bush
This play was inspired by a desire to look at all the stories of the people impacted by a kidnapping. I wondered what life was like for siblings of a kidnapped person, and the adjustment to a new life for a kidnapped person who wasn't aware of the all the layers of what happened in her life.
I always want to shine a line on the people and places that the media overlooks in its coverage of tragedies. Lean into the lighter moments, so the heartbreaking moments land with even greater resonance.
As is true with much of my work, directors should remember that when actors are addressing the audience, the audience is their scene partner. They're not speaking to the other characters onstage. And they should trust that the text will take the audience on the journey, so keep production elements simple.
