SYNOPSIS: Phoebe Whitehead's job, now that she is dead, is to inspire those who participate in the essay contest created in her name back in 1918. Phoebe comes to the stage to explain the difficulties her work entails. Whom of all the worthy contestants should she inspire? What form should that inspiration take? And what if, by chance, the inspired person doesn't actually win? Behind all of these complications, Phoebe harbors a deep secret-the Whitehead essay contest should never have been created at all! Ultimately, the play explores not so much the nature of inspiration but the nature of one downtrodden, klutzy but very loveable character-our narrator, Phoebe.
